Char Dham Yatra was considered as four abodes of God in all four directions – Rameshwaram in the south, Badrinath in the north, Puri in the east and Dwarka in the west. But as the years passed Char Dham Yatra has changed to the pilgrims in the Garhwal Himalayas. The four pilgrimages are Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. These temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Goddess Ganga and Goddess Yamuna respectively. These temples are located in the lofty peaks, lush greenery and the breathtaking beauty which is truly blessed by the Mother nature. Every Hindu wishes to go on the Char Dham yatra at least once in their lifetime. This Yatra helps the pilgrim to get themselves rid of their past sins.
The pilgrimage circuit of the Himalayas represents the primary cults like the Vaishnava site (Badrinath), Shaiva site (Kedarnath) and two Shakta sites (Yamunotri and Gangotri). Adi Shankaracharya, who was the creator of the these four holiest abodes where the God resides breathe his last in Kedarnath. The Yatra of the Char Dham starts from the east and ends in the west due to the practice of Parikrama (clockwise movement). Hence the Char Dham Yatra starts from Yamunotri than Gangotri followed by Kedarnath and Badrinath. Badrinath is considered as a very important part of the Hindu pilgrimages.
